Want an Electronic Drum Kit ?

Turn that useless rock band/guitar hero drum kit sitting in some dark corner of your house into something useful - an electronic drum kit! Follow the simple steps below:

What you will need:

  1. Xbox 360, PS3, Wii or PS2 drum kit (Works with the wireless drum kit with the USB receiver plugged into your computer)
  2. Computer - Mac/PC
  3. The relevant software and drivers (Discussed below)

Step 1.
•Download Max/MSP Runtime from this address- http://cycling74.com/downloads/runtime/
. You only need the download entitled Runtime (Which is free) not Max 5.
•Next download Miditarhero from

MIDItar Hero requires several additional downloads and installations to function correctly. If you do not read these instructions carefully, MIDItar Hero will not work correctly or even run at all.

Current version download links:

To use MIDItar Hero correctly, you will need the Max/MSP Runtime, the proper controller drivers, and the MIDItar Hero software. Of course, you’ll need a Guitar Hero or Rock Band instrument to properly use MIDItar Hero, but technically any USB device can be used with the program.

1. Download the Max/MSP Runtime
Max/MSP Runtime is FREE and can be downloaded from the Cycling ’74 website.

2. Download the necessary controller drivers
The required drivers depend on what console your instrument controller is meant for and what operating system your computer is running.

Xbox 360 Controller
Windows XP/Vista:
You will be prompted to download and install the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows driver when you plug the controller into the computer’s USB port.
Mac OS X:
You will need the Tattiebogle Xbox 360 Driver.
If you want to use a wireless Xbox 360 Controller, you will need to purchase the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. It should work on Mac OS X as well.

PS3 Controller
Windows:
You will need the SIXAXIS Driver for PC.
Mac OS X:
You will need the Tattiebogle PS3 Driver.

Wii Controller:
Only Wii controllers that are connected through USB work with MIDItar Hero. This includes the Rock Band Strat and the Rock Band Drum Set. They either require no additional drivers, or Windows will install the required drivers upon plugging in the controller.

PS2 Controller with a PS2 to USB adapter:
You will need to use the Custom Controller option in the OS/Platform Menu to configure your controller.

3. Download the MIDItar Hero software
After you have Max/MSP Runtime and the controller drivers installed, you can download MIDItar Hero.
Current version download links:

4. If you want guitar or drum sounds
MIDItar Hero does not create sounds – all it does is produce MIDI information that can be sent outside of the program to control sounds elsewhere. The default setting when you open MIDItar Hero is to send MIDI output to your computer’s built-in synthesizer, which is that piano sound you’re probably sick of by now. If you want to make anything other than that sound, you need a program or external MIDI device capable of playing software instruments through MIDI input.
If you’re running Windows and you want to use a software synthesizer from a digital audio workstation such as Mixcraft or FL Studio, you will need to download a virtual MIDI driver to send MIDI information from MIDItar Hero to your chosen program. I recommend using LoopBe1 as your virtual MIDI driver.
Once the virtual MIDI driver is installed and set up, you can link MIDItar Hero and your chosen program by setting the MIDI output within MIDItar Hero and the MIDI input within your chosen program to the same virtual MIDI port created by the virtual MIDI driver.
If you’re using Mac OS X, you do not need a virtual MIDI driver, as CoreAudio already supports virtual MIDI. Select “From Max/MSP” as your MIDI Output and Input to link MIDItar Hero with the other program.

(Also Free)
•Next download the relevant drivers. Depending on whether you are using a Mac or PC, or whether you are using a Wii/Ps3/Xbox etc. drum set you will require a different driver download. All are are available through this link •

•Install Max/MSP Runtime
•Install the relevant driver

Step 3.

•Connect your drums to you computer by plugging in the wireless receiver into your computer. Next hold the "on" button and then release and press it again. There should only be one light on the drum kit to show that it is on.

Step 4.

•Next open up Max/MSP Runtime.
-Set the controller box to the computer and drum kit that you are using e.g. PS3 GH Drum Kit (If using a mac select the options towards the bottom of the list).
-Set midi output to Max/MSP runtime
-Click on the circle that says drums
-If using a Mac, open up the programme Garagebandor Ableton/if using a PC download Ableton (Which has a 30 day free trial or download FL studio from this link - http://www.image-line.com/documents/flstudio.html, which has a infinite free trial but does not allow you to save which is irrelevant if only using it to play the drums).

Step 5. (If using a Mac)

•With garageband open, start a new project and select piano.
-From the right hand side information panel select drums and then subsequently the rock kit as the instrument of choice.
-Then click the edit button and select controller as "Drum Kit" and below as default. The drums should now be responsive and produce sound when hit.
-To further edit which sound each drum pad makes, open up midi tar hero, press setup in the drums box and make the relevant edits there. The notes for each pad are colour coded i.e. red pad is the note (e.g. C1) coloured red.

Step 5. (Ableton - If using a PC or an alternative for a mac user)
•If using Ableton - Open up Ableton and go to preferences.
-Select midi and turn on track and remote for max runtime 1 in the menu.
-Next open up ableton's instruments, select drum rack followed by kit. From the list select the kit you want from the list (Double click to select it from the menu).
-Select the arm/record button for the drum kit (turns red when active and is located below the S and yellow number buttons.
-The drum kit should now make sounds. To assign the sounds to their respective pads, go to midi tar and select setup from the drum box. The respective notes for each pad will be listed here. The notes for each pad are colour coded i.e. red pad is the note (e.g. C1) coloured red. In ableton drag the respective sounds to the piano notes listed in midi tar.
•The process is similar for FL studio users.

If any further information is required or more information is required for using midi tar with Fl Studio please feel free to leave a comment below. An instruction manual is also available from the midi tar website - (It is called Miditar Hero V1.0 Readme and is located at the top of this link
