How To Have A Great Bank Holiday On The Cheap

So the May Bank Holiday weekend is approaching quickly and despite the declining weather, we optimistic students are adamant to make the most of our glorious lecture-free days. Our rather restricted budget can, however, be a massive pain in the ass when it comes to making plans. But fear not my fellow procrastinators, I have compiled a list of things to do this weekend which require little or no money, but will ensure hours of responsibility neglecting fun, because who wants to focus on exam season anyway? Here's how to have a great bank holiday weekend on the cheap:

1) Movie Night

This simple yet effective time passer is popular among the masses. Drag all of your friends to wherever the nearest Netflix point is and once the unavoidable 'what movie will we watch' argument has been settled, kick back, relax and indulge in microwave popcorn, oven pizza and hours of couch potato-ing. Perfect.

2) A Picnic

Sounds cheesy and boring, but a picnic is actually a really good way to pass a bit of time over the Bank Holiday weekend. There's just something about sitting in the grass with a ham sandwich that's guaranteed to make you feel 10 years old again. Give your best friend(s) a call and get them to bring some of the food. Then, pick a good spot like by a lake or on the beach and you're set. This is of course weather permitting, but with a good group of people, a picnic can be a laugh, and at the very least, you won't go hungry.

3) Games Night

This doesn't just mean monopoly arguments with your nearest and dearest, there are a whole load of things you can play with 'the squad'. For example, I came across a sort of Jenga/ Truth or Dare hybrid on Pinterest the other day. Basically, each Jenga piece had a dare written on it and whoever pulled the piece had to follow its instructions. There are tonnes of other games like this on the internet that are great fun and don't cost more than a few quid at most.

3) Sight Seeing

Like the picnic, it sounds ridiculous but it's actually good fun. Seriously though, how many places are at most an hour from where you live and have never been explored by little old you? The likes of The Sally Gap, The Giant's Causeway and Newgrange are only a few of the most beautiful places Ireland has to offer and they won't leave a gaping hole in your bank account either. Get your friends, your family or just yourself and your dog out on a bit of an adventure. You'll thank me for it later.

4) Girls/Lads Night In

Get your girls or lads together for a night of relaxed banter. Honestly, when's the last time you had all your girls around for a pampering and a good bitch, or the lads over for Xbox marathons and too much food? Probably when you were 13, yes? Organise this for the Bank Holiday weekend because honestly, it's like some kind of group therapy. All the stress of exam season seems to just melt when you're with good friends and also, it's FREE.

*The enjoyment levels of all of the above activities are greatly increased by the consumption of cheap alcohol. Just saying.*
