Points For A Number Of Arts Degrees Have Significantly Dropped
This morning over 50,000 Leaving Cert students discovered if they obtained their CAO choice and while 40% of course points have increased, demand for Arts degrees has significantly dropped.
Points have fallen significantly in University College Cork (UCC), by 46 points to 300 and by seven points to 320 in Maynooth University. Annually, Maynooth has the highest number of students completing an Arts degree.
Points for the Arts degree in Mary Immaculate college have fallen by 16 points to 320 and Arts in NUIG has stayed the same.
University College Dublin (UCD) saw the biggest rise in points for its Arts course. The course is typically around the 320 mark in points but a shake-up in the course structure means that Humanities, Arts and Social Science are now independent courses. The Humanities course has fallen by 20 points, while Arts (381 points) and Social Science (392 points) has increased by 55 and 72 points respectively.
University of Limerick (UL) and Dublin College University (DCU) Arts degrees increased by three points.
According to RTÉ News, the Dean of Arts Dr. Fionnuala Dillane is urging people who are disappointed to look Humanities and wait for the second round of CAO offers on the 29th of August.
Students are turning to courses such as engineering, teaching, and science as job opportunities for graduates are more likely.
