A 90s TV Show Is Getting A Reboot But Not Everyone's Happy
Charmed's Halliwell sisters were a key component to any girl growing up in the 90s. After Pru was killed off, Shannon Doherty, left the show, the Charmed sisters continued to battle demons with the help of their half-sister Paige, Rose McGowan.
Now the charming story is being brought back to life in a new series that will center on a new batch of Halliwell sisters called the Pruitts, surely a nod at Shannon Doherty's character Prue. The three sisters have been cast and here in Ireland a lot of these faces will not be relatively well known. Madeline Mantock will play Macy, the oldest sister with the power of telekinesis. Melonie Diaz will play the middle child Mel Pruitt, a passionate and outspoken lesbian activist who girlfriend is a detective. The youngest Pruitt sister, Madison Pruitt (Sarah Jeffrey) who'll play a bubbly freshman student.
The updated Charmed comes from Jane the Virgin creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and the CW have called it a "fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done.”
The reboot was meant to happen in 2017 and based in 1976 but the network didn't feel the new script worked and waited for Jane The Virgin writers Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin to be free to work on the script.
Holly Marie Combs, a former star of the show who played Piper Halliwell, is one of the many actors involved with the show who's questioning the reboot:
Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.

The original Charmed show lasted eight seasons and, behind Desperate Housewives, is the second longest-running show to have an all-female lead cast. Charmed isn't the only 90s witch getting a reboot, Sabrina The Teenage Witch will be returning to our screens later this year. Whatever the reason, we're excited to see what they'll do with Charmed 2.0.
