Monster
Based on a true story, Charlize Theron underwent a massive transformation to play prostitute turned serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a role that earned her an Academy Award. It's a powerful and tragic movie that can only be watched once. The rape scene is so brutal, I had to pause the movie for 10 minutes before I continued to watch it.
Boys Don't Cry
Also based on real-life events, the movie portrays the murder of 20-year old Brandon Teena, a trans man who was raped and murdered by a two ex-cons after they found out the boy they were hanging out with was born female. Hilary Swank's depiction of Brandon deservedly won her an Academy Award.
Requiem For A Dream
Starring Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly, the film's depiction of addiction is compelling and deeply disturbing. We watch four desperate characters as they fall further and further down a black pit while searching for their next high. If there ever was a film that made you not want to do drugs, this is it.
Warning: the finale is stomach-turning.
Schindler's List
Let's face it, a movie that depicts the Holocaust is never going to be give you an easy time of it. Spielberg's take on the story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) who used his armaments factory as a shelter for over 1,100 Jews during the bleakest period in modern history is widely revered as a masterpiece.
Captivating and wrenching, a stop you cold in your tracks moment takes place when Amon Goeth shoots two people from his balcony. Watch it and you'll get what we mean.
American History X
To say American History X is a difficult watch is an understatement. Dealing with racial hatred and violence, the 1998 movie tells the story of ex Neo-Nazi Derek (Edward Norton) as he tries to prevent his little brother from going down the same road as him.
So many scenes in this movie to recover from- the curb scene will send shivers down your spine.
