Your Harry Potter Books Could Be Worth A Serious Amount Of Cash
You're alive so you've obviously read at least one Harry Potter book, or have one lying around the house. We bet you never thought they'd be worth any money though did you? Well as it turns out they could just be. Online book marketplace AbeBooks have recently published a guide detailing which books are worth the most dollah.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Look out for: Print line reading 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 and the crediting of “Joanne Rowling.” The hardcover first edition is by far the most sought-after. Only 500 were ever published and most of these were given to libraries. Prices vary from $40,000 (£29,000) to $55,000 (£40,000). Meanwhile, advance proof copies are available from $7,500 (£5,400) to $13,500 (£9,700).
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Look out for: Signed copies. Copies of the 1998 hardcover first edition first reach $9,000 (£6,500).
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Look out for: “Joanne” instead of “JK Rowling,” number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 and a block of misaligned text on page seven. The “Joanne” version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban can sell for up to $12,000 (£8,650), due in part to the fact that no one is certain how many copies there are.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Look out for: JK Rowling’s signature. Due to their soaring popularity, a smaller proportion of the later books were signed by JK Rowling. Therefore, those which were signed can sell for more than $10,000 (£7,200).
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Look out for: JK Rowling’s signature. Again, the surge in popularity saw fewer signings and subsequently a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will fetch four figures. Those who made the journey to Edinburgh for the book release will be pleased they did so. Illustrator Jason Cockroft also signed copies which are now worth around $200 (£144).
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Look out for: Signed copies. Similarly, there were fewer tours around the release of The Half-Blood Prince and signed copies are therefore worth $5,000 (£3,600). Copies signed by illustrator Mary GrandPre are also worth around $250 (£180).
So yeah, excuse us while we go and check all of our Harry Potter books...
