5 Childhood PS2 Games You've Probably Forgotten
Nostalgia is a strange one, the overwhelmingly good feeling based off something triggering a long lost memory from your childhood. Here at CollegeTimes we've put our heads together and assembled some of the best PlayStation games you have forgotten you love. So here you are, five childhood video games you've probably forgotten:
Ape Escape
Developed in Japan and published by Sony for the PlayStation in 1999, the Ape Escape series is an off the wall story full of pop culture references. The gist of the story revolves around monkeys being sent to take over the world as you play as a young boy set on capturing all the primates with a variety of tools at your disposal. Aside from this the most memorable part of the game was the play on celebrity names they used for every monkey. For example Harley Q. Win, Count Monkula and Darth Apester. This series is a certified classic and has sinceĀ been remastered for current gen consoles.
Jak & Daxter
Jak & Daxter is the definition of mid 00's edginess. There are three games in the main series released from 2001 to 2004 for the PS2. The games follow our (anti) hero Jak along with his furry otter/weasel-like sidekick Daxter. Daxter is there solely for comic relief, consistent with quick one liners and quips both as witty and cringe as Spiderman. From a mystic island to a great city and finally an expansive desert, the series has really held its own in creativity and being able to try new things consistently. It also had plenty of spin-offs like the racing game Jak X. This series has stood the test of time and remains a favorite.
Ratchet & Clank
There is a lot of space in space...
The intergalactic sci-fi series has a special place in all of our hearts. Following Ratchet (a strange alien species, we think?) and his partner Clank, a robot that is smooth as ice. The pair travel through different worlds with hopes of stopping Dr. Nefarious and other enemies with a variety of strange out of this world weapons. Our favorites are the Sheepinator and the Groovitron.
Sly Cooper
Sly Cooper is a stealth game following a racoon-thief, known for only stealing from other thieves. The game is set in a real life setting only all of the characters are animals. The series involves elaborate heists around the world, staying out of spotlights and overcoming other criminal masterminds. With witty remarks and a cast of a racoon, turtle and hippopotamus this series has it all.
Lego Star Wars
The Lego games! Still going strong to this day, the Lego games series is the definition of timeless. Starting in 1997 with Lego Island, the one everyone remembers the most fondly is Lego Star Wars released in 2005. Lego have a charming way of telling classic movies and stories through their own quirky way in Lego. With buildable objects and fun mixed with lightsabers and the force, Lego Star Wars is every kids dream.
Honorable Mentions:
The EyeToy
Not really a game but the EyeToy was a revolutionary piece of kit. Paving the way for the Xbox Kinect and arguably motion controls and other means than the standard controller, the EyeToy was ahead of its time. The miniature camera that connects to your PlayStation had a variety of games encouraging you to get up and moving. The standout games available were the EyeToy Groove and Play. Surely you could pick one up somewhere online? This was 100% good times. See above a trailer from 2003, if only times were that simple again.
The thing with nostalgia and retro (retro already?!) is that lists like this could go on forever so here are a few classics that deserve a shout out in their own right:
Stuntman Ignition, Shrek Superslam, Gaelic Games 2, Rugby 08, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
