How many people, in terms of your superiors, can truly, honestly say that they love what they do? How many people are really, honestly passionate about their day to day lives and their careers? I'm a firm believer in following your dreams, no matter how obscure or outrageous that those dreams may appear to be because really, why the hell not? Here are 7 reasons why you need to love your college course and follow your dreams:

1) You need to be truly honest to yourself.

Of course, this applies to every single aspect of your life, but even more so, I feel, when it comes to college and what you should or shouldn't be studying. I wish I had really, honestly listened to my gut back when I was deciding on what to study in college. Deep down, I had this strange pull towards studying film but everyone around me scoffed and told me that I'd never succeed in such an obscure field. So instead I chose Arts omnibus and was miserable for three years. Moral of this sorry story? Study why YOU want to study.

2) You need to study what you're really passionate about.

Yes, accounting may pay the bills in seven years time, but does it get your brain racing and your skin glowing? Thought not. (Unless of course accounting is your idea of heaven, in which case, I sincerely apologise.) You're going to spend the next forty odd years of your life getting up every morning and working in this area, so unless you love it with every fibre of your being, you'll end up resenting that. Think back on the interests in your life that excite and light you up and focus on that.

3) Don't focus entirely on your future salary.

Sure, it's important to be self-sufficient and financially stable, but at what cost? At the cost of casting aside your true passions and desires to be chained to a desk in a greying cubicle? Screw that. I've stood by and watched friend after friend fall into the trap of working a job that pays well but offers them nothing else in return. Miserable and living solely for Friday evenings, I beg of you not to succumb to this fate. Money really isn't everything, your quality of life is worth much more than that.

4) There's so much choice now that there's a college course out there for everyone.

Gone are the days when you could study science, languages, medicine or finance. Now, there's something for everyone of every taste and interest, you just need to do your research and find a course that really grabs your interest. From social media to pharmacy, wherever your area of interest lies, there's something that'll fit you perfectly, so there's literally no excuse!

5) Three or four years is a long time to intensely study something....

....So you'd better make sure that you enjoy what it is that you're studying. Think of those long days, those many, many assignments, the exams, the late evenings spent stuck in the library and the hours spent pouring over thick textbooks. Well, I assure you, if you enjoy the subject matter, then it'll be all the easier, all the more interesting, all more informative and easier to retain information. Don't waste your time, your (parent's) money or your life on something that you don't even want.

6) Who are you really trying to please anyway?

Your parents? Your friends? Or, more importantly, yourself? It all comes down to one very VERY important thing here. This is your life. YOURS. We get one single shot at it. It's not like a film whereby you can pause, rewind and erase the bad parts. Do you really want to look back at yourself thirty years from now and wonder 'what if?' 'What ifs' are for the weak, 'just do its' are for the strong-minded and the dreamers. Dare to dream and always stay true to yourself because your opinion of yourself is the most important one of all.

7) Because your college years are the best years of your life, so make sure your squeeze the most from them.

They say that your school days are some of the best days of your life, but whoever said that clearly didn't go to college. College is a time to discover yourself. To become independent and confident. To know who you are, where you're going and what you want to achieve in life. It's a time to make friends, break friends, discover your wild side and do things that you'll never get away with doing ever again. So, to ensure that these few years are the best that they can be, you need to be studying something that brings you to life, not something that sucks the life out of you.
