Mallorca Beach Evacuated After 10-Foot Shark Found In The Water
Short of accidentally wandering over to the weird nudist section that is unerringly a feature of every continental beach, encountering a shark is easily everyone's greatest fear when embarking on a seaside frolick. It is the top fear on the list, the apex fear.
Well, for visitors to one Mallorcan beach, this was the terrifying situation they had to confront (the one about sharks, not nudists). A ten foot shark was spotted in the shallows of Cala Domingos forcing hundreds to evacuate the waters to seek the safety of the land, firmly outside of the shark's purview - unless it had fashioned a set of sort of rudimentary legs and accompanying breathing apparatus to enable it to continue its pursuit of the beach-goers. This, however, does not seem to be the case from the reports that we've seen.
The shark has been identified as a blue shark which feeds primarily on small fish and squid. This type of shark however is typically found in deeper waters, raising suspicions as to what it was doing in the shallows. It was apparently swimming erratically and resisting attempts from police and fire fighters to be ushered back out to sea. As a result, biologists from a local aquarium helped retrieve the shark from the water for its own safety and it was discovered that it had suffered a massive wound to its head from a harpoon.
As will come as no surprise given that this shark was now both out of the water and grievously wounded on its head, it died quite soon after.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those the shark has left behind.
