St Patrick's Weekend Playlist - New Irish Music
Amidst all the diddly eye tunes and pipe bands this weekend just break for 10 minutes to listen to some of the current alternative bands slogging hard to break through in our fair land. This weekend shouldn't be all about tin whistles, snakes and midgets dressed as leprechauns to exploit the tourists...there are genuine artists with exceptional material out there who are in need of support. The acts chosen here are either playing somewhere in the capital this weekend or worthy of a few minutes of your time, we guarantee you won't be disappointed .....Happy St. Patrick's Weekend all!
Superblondes
'Blondes new single Take and Take is a breath of fresh air and sees them making ALL the right sounds in a career that it steadily and consistently gathering pace...clocking in at five and a half minutes you won't feel it fly by as it builds to an epic outro of swirling guitars...this cracking tune saw them hook up with Producer Kieran Lynch of U2 fame but there's no rest for the wicked as they have moved on to record their début album with immensely popular Irish producer/songwriter Gavin Glass. Expect exciting results!
Darling
I'm a bit of a Tears for Fears buff so there is a certain fondness in Darling for me, coupled with Funeral Suits they are part of a bill in the Ambassador Theatre this Sunday nigh (the 16th) that includes in my humble opinion two of the best bands in this country at the moment....we caught the ex kinetics members gig in The Academy 2 recently as well as sitting down with them for an interview and they really are an exciting prospect...especially now that second single Sail Away has garnered so much radio play.
Funeral Suits
The Dublin band's debut LP Lily of the Valley included excellent tracks Colour Fade, Health and All Those Friendly People as well as some fantastic videos. Live they are as intense as the are on record and this Sunday in the Ambassador is the perfect stage and audience for them to show exactly why the praise has been heaped on them. They're not just an extremely cool name.
Youth Mass
The four piece from Trim have seen praise coming from all quarters with coverage by Dan Hegarty (2fm), Paul McCloone (Today FM), Cathal Funge (Phantom FM), and 98FM's Irish champion John Barker. With a début album on the way, Youth Mass are one Irish band that have their road seemingly paved with success ..
White Lies
Ok..Ok, they're not Irish but they will be playing here for the first time in 4 and a half years at the Jameson Patrick's Day Live with both Darling and Funeral Suits in the Ambassador this Sunday. They are all over my playlists this week and a captivating live act. I caught them in Camden's Roundhouse last December in London and they nearly tore the roof off the place. I sound like I'm working for Jameson don't I...I'm not, but I think they must've tailor made the line up for me ;)
