Style Mistakes Every Girl Makes When Starting College
The few weeks leading up to your first days at college can be both exciting and horribly nerve wrecking. The horror sets in as you begin to worry about what other people will think of you and whether you’ll make friends or not. Here is a few style mistakes that you should try and avoid during your first weeks of College. For people reading this in their last year, look back and laugh as we all made a few too many of these little blunders.
1) You Try Too Hard
Many students begin to think that because it is a new start, they can create a whole new self. Most people will go all out to buy new clothes that set them apart from everybody else. This is mistake numero uno. While you may think you look the part of a sophisticated college student, you really look like you got dressed in the dark. Don’t try too hard to fit in and look the best. Be yourself and wear what’s comfortable, if you look like yourself, you'll attract the right friends.
2) You Put On Too Much Make Up
This can be a problem with many first years. The average secondary school won’t let you wear a slither of make up on your face, not even for graduation, so when college comes knocking, girls begin to think they have a new found freedom and will slap as much make up as they can find on their faces. Stay away and be natural. There is no need to go all out with the eyeliner and foundation (you're not baking a cake, one layer will do).
3) Curling Your Hair Every Single Day
Like make up, girls can put an added amount of effort into their hair on the first few weeks of college. As lovely and pretty as it might be, believe me, your hair will be flung into a messy bun on the third week. There is no problem with making an effort on the first few days but curling or straightening your hair all the time will do serious damage.
4) Low Tops Ain’t Fooling Nobody
You always get the girls who are the flirts of the course, and that’s totally fine. They’ve probably been locked up in an all-girls school for the past six years and this is like Disneyland to them. The freedom of being allowed to wear what you want can be a tricky one as some girls can go a bit cray-cray. Stop with the low cut tops and shorts skirts, college isn't a disco ladies.
5) Uncomfortable Clothes
Like the low cuts, when you go on a crazy wardrobe overhaul for starting college, make sure you're comfortable in everything, because you will be going through long days and hard lecture chairs which aren't very fun. All the fancy tops and jeans will be thrown at the back of your wardrobe by week two and you will be sporting woolly jumpers and fluffy socks. Comfort is key in college, it's the only place that it's not totally frowned upon if you turn up in sweat pants. Embrace!
6) Heeled Shoes
Whether you commute to college or live right down the road, do not wear heels. Obviously you won’t have your Jimmy Choos on but heeled boots can be such a pain for walking around campus all day and going up and down the library stairs. The Chelsea style boots are huge for Autumn and there is barely a heel on them, so it’s a winner all round.
7) Tangoed
A nice tan is great if you’re just back from the Costa Durada, but don’t overdo the fake stuff when you first start college. Looking tangoed isn't flattering and when it gets blotchy it will end up annoying you more than anything else. Getting a spray tan for a night out is perfect but just try to wash it off for your morning lecture (that goes for the club entry stamp too).
Starting college can be an anxious time for everyone but try to stay as sane as you can and not have a meltdown when it comes to what to wear. Be comfortable in your own skin and you can’t go wrong.
