Work Done By Stay At Home Parents Worth €50,000 According To Survey
A survey conducted by insurance company Royal London has found that the work done by stay at home parents is worth an annual salary of €50,000.
The research analyses the different jobs done around the home by stay at home parents for the family, from cooking to cleaning to washing up.
The research found that all of those jobs combined was worth a total of around €47,933 per year.
Despite this research, around 80 percent of the people surveyed by Royal London underestimated the work done by stay at home parents by a huge margin. Most people believe that the work done around the home is worth around €28,000 per annum.
Despite this markdown in worth, spokesperson for Royal London Sarah Murphy has said that lockdown has given people a new perspective on the sheer amount of work needed around the home. Having to do those tasks routinely throughout lockdown gave people a new found appreciation for those who stay at home.
“The question was put to respondents before the country went into lockdown, and before thousands of parents became stay-at-home mams and dads as a result – often while trying to juggle the responsibilities of another job as well.
“It would be interesting to see, if we ask the same question next year, if the results are very different as a result.”
An Irish breakdown in survey respondents found that those in Munster though the work done in the home was worth just €26,000 per year. Those in Connacht, on the other hand, believed that those who work around the home deserved an annual salary of €30,000, which was the highest of the four provinces.
From 2006 to 2016, the number of men who work around the home in Ireland has almost doubled. However, women still dominate the sector, making up 98 percent of homemakers.
