9 Things Culchie Students Need To Know Before Heading Off To College
When you're a culchie, there's plenty of things to take into consideration when trying to pick which third level institute you'll enter. Distance is one thing, because the further you move from home, the more confusing it is to fit into the city life you've chosen. Here's 9 things country students going to college in the city need to know:
1. You probably didn't understand why the people you passed on the footpath didn't say hello back to you.
Even third or fourth year students are still thinking about the encounter they had on the first day they moved.
2. The local bread from home that mammy bought every other day will be a thing of the past
That right, saying goodbye to the traditional brown soda bread you loved so much, and saying hello to the 79c of Hovis sliced pan is something you just have to deal with.
3. If you drive, the price of petrol or diesel in the cities will absolutely flabbergast you
"Mam, the petrol is three cents dearer here. Pop down to O'Brien's right now and fill up the spare cans in the shed with their petrol for me to take back next Sunday! I don't care if you have to use milk cartons, just do it! THREE CENTS MOTHER!"
4. People won't have a fecking clue what you're saying at first
Your accent will probably sound like word vomit to the city-slickers for the first few weeks, so be careful.
5. Your sense of humour will be a lot different to most
A pretty universal point, but particularly in college, it's gonna take a few hours of hanging out with each other before they realise you're being sarcastic on really awkward topics.
6. Be careful when you ask for directions
Many people will assume you already have a fair idea of the geography of the area you're in, and you being the quiet country native you are, will tell them you understand perfectly. And you'll get even more lost.
7. Whatever fashion sense you thought you had, yeaaaah that's going to have to change.
Because your clean jeans, hoodie and "good runners" just aren't going to cut it anymore. Okay?
8. You're going to miss your dog
And you will want to pet every dog you see on the street.
9. You will enjoy every bit of college regardless
Because you're good craic and will make great friends with everyone.
