How To Make Friends In Your 1st Year Of College
Starting college is a fantastic time filled with new experiences, but for a lot of people it can also be a lonely place.
Your first few months at college are like starting secondary school all over again, with new faces, unfamiliar surroundings and a general sense of anxiety. It can all get a bit much and it can be lonely for some people.
We've decided to round up some top tips on how to make life-long friends in your first year of college.
1. Join Societies
This is by far the easiest and best way to make some new mates. Joining a society you're interested in will automatically introduce you to people you've something in common with. Not only that, but you'll find by going to the societies events you'll have an activity to do and your friendship will blossom faster than you can say 'mates.'
2. Say yes to everything
If someone's having a gaff – go to it. If there's a class night out, a society event, someone invites you for lunch, just say yes to it all. The more experiences you have, the better.
3. Volunteer at events
Put up your hand and just go for it. Working at a stand or organising something will introduce you to tonnes of new people so again, say yes.
4. Become a class rep
This looks good on your CV and again, will introduce you to loads of new people. Feeling like you're part of something will give you the confidence to volunteer for more stuff and also get you hanging out with more people on the daily.
5. Hit up the college bar
This is the social hub of any college. Let's not lie here, a bit of drink can do wonders for your confidence and will have you bonding with people in no time. Live a little.
6. Plan a class night out
If you do become class rep, or even if you don't – plan a class night out. You'll get to know people in your year and again, there's nothing like a party to make a few friends.
7. Join a GirlCrew
There are GirlCrew and boy groups in every city in the world. Just search them on Facebook and you'll find other people in whatever city or town you're in who are looking for people to hang out with. It's worth a shot.
