A Plan For Much-Needed Dublin Student Housing Has Been Rejected

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know of the struggle to find student accommodation in Dublin at the moment. So when we heard that a plan for a 152-bed student accommodation was axed in Drumcondra, it was sad news.

According to The Irish Times, the apartments were to be built beside the Mater Dei Institute of Education, with five houses needing to be demolished. The apartment block was to feature six double rooms and 140 single apartments. Over 30 local residents were actively against the student housing getting built, as locals are currently already concerned over apparent anti-social behaviour in the area.

One of the main reasons the student housing isn't being built is down to the fact the proposed building is too large in structure and it features "inappropriate design". Green Party councillor Ciaran Cuffe has said, "We need student housing. But we have got to insist on quality. Students coming to live in apartments for a college term deserve a decent place to stay, and the concerns of the local residents have to be considered as well".

However, there's some hope, as Minister for Education Richard Bruton is to release plans for more student accommodation in Irish cities in June. Could this solve the student housing crisis in the long-term? We hope so.
