Here's How You Can Leave The Catholic Church
Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware of the Tuam scandal that's been causing an outrage amongst the Irish public. A shocking 796 infant corpses were found on the grounds of a Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Galway, and since the story broke there has been even more controversy surrounding it.
There's been allegations of nuns selling human hair to wig makers in England, infants being trafficked to the US and more recently, remains found in a septic tank on site. On the back of this and how it's been handled, it's quite literally the nail in the coffin for a lot of undecided Catholics across Ireland.
The fact that today, the Catholic League have branded the scandal as 'fake news' has seriously highlighted the lack of responsibility accepted in all aspects of the Catholic Church. If you've decided that you no longer believe in the religion that sweeps disgusting acts like this under the rug, there are finally options. A website called notme.ie, allows you to leave a message of symbolic defection from the Catholic Church.
It's not official by any means, and has 'no impact on the Catholic Church’s view of your religious standing but is a way to identify as not Catholic'. Their website states that, 'It does not signify or support atheism or humanism as many religious people also support church and state separation.'
At the end of the day, your religion is your own business but for some, belonging to something they don't believe in just doesn't seem right.
