Ireland One Of The Safest Countries In The World According To Study
A new study carried out by the Institute for Economics & Peace has revealed that Ireland is one of the safest countries in the world, coming in 10th safest overall. For the 10th year in a row Iceland was declared the safest country, no wonder so many mums go there.
The report surveyed 163 countries altogether with the rankings determined by 23 factors including homicide rate, incarceration & violent crime.
Eight of the top twelve countries are located in Europe with the United Kingdom ranking 41st, and the United States coming in at a lowly 114th.
The most dangerous countries were Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. No surprises there.
Here is the top ten in full:
- 12. Australia
- 11. Japan
- 10. Ireland
- 9. Switzerland
- 8. Canada
- 7. Slovenia
- 6. Czech Republic
- 5. Denmark
- 4. Austria
- 3. Portugal
- 2. New Zealand
- 1. Iceland
Other conclusions drawn from the study include:
- The world slightly improved in peace last year but has become less peaceful over the last decade
- There has been a decline in militarisation over the past three decades
- Current peacebuilding spending focused on building peace is well below the optimal level
- Falls in Positive Peace make countries susceptible to populist political movements
So good and bad news on the peace front, but at least we can rest easy knowing our little island is one of the safer places to live. And who wants to live in Iceland anyway, it's a kip.
