Life's About To Get Easier For Country Students With Late Night Rural Bus Service Plans

The news that a late night rural bus service is being planned for 15 counties is sure to put a smile on many a face - particularly country students.

University students from rural areas can attest to what a pain it is trying to rely on public transport. Balancing getting assignments done with seeing your family and keeping your social life on track is made much harder if you don't drive.

The bus service in the countryside is notably bad - a lot of them finish at 3.30pm or 4.00pm in the day - but that looks all set to change with new proposals for an extended service.

The 15 counties are: Cork,  Waterford, Wexford, Offaly, Tipperary, Kerry, Kildare, Limerick, Donegal,  Laois, Cavan, Monaghan, Westmeath, Meath and Longford.

Fine Gael put the wheels in motion for the plan to go ahead which is currently being considered by the Transport Minister, Shane Ross.

Commenting on the new proposals, Party Chairman Martin Heydon said the service is about a lot more than providing access to a local pub:

The idea of this bus trip is about giving people in those (rural) areas, who don't have access to transport, that option of being able to go into their nearest town or village or perhaps visit neighbours in those areas.
