University Of Limerick Students Could Soon Be Living In A Fast Food Wonderland

UL students are set to get another choice thrown in the mix when it comes to eating out as Limerick City could be set to open a new family-friendly restaurant in a long-vacant property.

According to The Limerick Leader, Dunnes Stores is looking to obtain planning permission from Limerick City and County Council to permit the use of the unit as a licensed restaurant. In 2008, the branch closed its O'Connell street branch and have been trying to fill the premise since.

Helen O’Donnell, of Limerick Tidy Towns, said she hoped any restaurant taking space would be "high end."Dunnes Stores (Limerick) is marketing the property as a “family friendly” outlet although they have said they do not have a confirmed tenant yet.

Nando’s, KFC, Milano's Eddie Rockets and Five Guys are all definite possibilities. This also brings the news that 40 new jobs could be on the horizon, offering full-time and part-time roles for students.

Ms. O Donnell commented on the possibility of a new fast-food restaurant:

We are well-supplied with restaurants and particularly fast-food restaurants. One would question having another establishment of that nature in the city. There are two sides to this: you want that building filled, but you want it filled appropriately. I think Limerick needs very smart eateries.

Limerick City and County Council is expected to decide on the application on or before Wednesday, October 18.
