Penneys UK Urgently Recall Thousands Of Flip Flops Because Of Cancerous Chemical
Summer is here and if you're anything like the rest of us you're grabbing your last few minute bits. Primark, the UK equivalent to Penneys, announced on their website that they're recalling a number of flip flops that do not meet the standards of the chain. The flip flops were on sale from the 4th January 2017 to the 2nd June 2017. The numbers and colours are:
Khaki - 02387/07, 08, 09
Black - 02387/01, 02, 03
Blue - 02387/04, 05, 06
In a statement on their website the brand had the following to say:
It has come to our attention that the footwear product detailed above does not meet the Primark usual high standards for chemical compliance. We have found levels of a restricted substance in the product in excess of the 1.0 mg/kg requirement.
The product can be returned without proof of purchase and you will be offered a full refund.
According to the BBC, a Primark spokesperson said that the chemical was chrysene, used in dark coloured dyes, but said it was present at levels that would pose a minimal health and safety risk to customers.
Researchers have discovered that chrysene causes cancer to laboratory animals when applied to their skin. It is suggested that people exposed could also develop cancer. It is not known whether chrysene can cause cancer through air or consumption but it may be a health risk.
In a statement to BreakingNews.ie, Penneys want to reassure customers the product was not sold in Ireland. The Cedar Wood range of flip flops were only available in the UK and Northern Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Belgium).
The product was recalled after a third party inquiry and the company has suspended any further orders the from the factory that manufactures the flip flops.
