Big News: Trinity College Is Planning A Second Campus
It's one of the most well-known colleges in the world but soon there could be a second Trinity College campus. Word is the prestigious university has some huge plans for new digs in Grand Canal Docks.
According to the Irish Times, Trinity has not only got a little too big for their boots metaphorically, they have now literally. The nearly 500-year-old college wants to expand their horizons a little west with a technology campus, complete with student accommodation and retailers.
The idea is part of the €1 billion plans to develop the area as an “innovation district”, and the Trinity campus will cost €250 million with a completion date in the next five years.
According to Trinity’s head of research and innovation Diarmuid O’Brien, the new campus could "become the most significant higher education funded project since the beginning of the State”. Big call but he might be right.
Apparently Grand Canal Dock was chosen because it's close to some small companies you might have heard of like Facebook, Twitter and Google.
In a letter sent to the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton last August, released under the Freedom of Information Act, Trinity’s provost Patrick Prendergast said the second campus “will be one of Trinity’s most ambitious projects” and “will create 1,000 new student places in fields where there are currently significant shortages” like engineering and computer science.
