The Sunday Times Has Announced Its University Of The Year For 2019

Each year we can really on a select few points of fixity, several occurrences which act as anchors to help us frame the passing of time: the leaves falling from the trees; the nights closing in to herald the arrival of winter and, the announcement of The Sunday Times' University of the Year.

Well, as climate change begins to wreak ever greater devastation on our planet and it seems increasingly likely that the idea of 'leaves', 'trees' and 'winter' are set to become mostly redundant, it will soon fall exclusively at the feet of The Sunday Times to act as an annual beacon to mark the year's cycles.

The publication have announced that the University of Limerick can proudly declare themselves to be the 'University of the Year 2019'. It is the second time in five years that they have been awarded the accolade, having previously been named as such in 2015.

Contrary to my suggestion that the accolade ought be decided by each university nominating a delegate to send to a large municipal hall somewhere in Laois to decide, through the medium of competitive dance, Ireland's pre-eminent university, The Sunday Times have seen fit to decide the award based on various other metrics. UL secured the award based on several factors, primarily the employability of its graduates, the strength of its cooperative education and internship programmes, its exceptional industry research programmes as well as its impressive new €31 million library.

Alastair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said:

A second success in five years for our University of the Year is well deserved. The University is at the economic heart of this midwest city and the wider region, attracting brains and resources in equal measure. Its graduates are among the most employable in Ireland, prepared for work by practical courses and a work placement and internship programme second to none, which spans 1,600 employers at home and overseas.

Congratulations to all at UL.
