Irish University Bans Sale Of Sugary Drinks From Its Food Outlets
UCD have taken the drastic step to ban sales of sugary drinks in all of its food and drinks outlets.
This means, that drinks of high sugar levels will be prohibited from sale in their 16 food and drink outlets throughout their campus, however they will still be selling the low calorie alternatives of popular drinks.
The decision comes after a 7-week trial taken earlier in the year which banned the sale of drinks such as Monster and Red Bull. The trial led to students opting for healthier drinks options with the majority, three quarters, of students admitting that they did not even notice the loss of choice.
It comes as part of an initiative entitled 'Healthy UCD', in conjunction with the HSE and the Healthy Ireland project, and will become the first campus in the country to have taken such a drastic decision to counteract the sale of such unhealthy drinks.
