Tributes Pour In After UL Student Dies From Fall

Tributes continue to be posted on social media today after the tragic passing of University of Limerick student Sophie Coll, 19, a second-year BBS International Student. Sophie a Galway native, and former NUI Galway student died after falling in her student accommodation in College Court, Castleroy on Monday. Gardai confirmed that Sophie lost her life on Wednesday evening, two days after being brought to University Hospital Limerick Intensive Care Unit.

UL President, Des Fitzgerald, announced Sophie's death in an email that was sent to staff and students:

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the sudden death of UL student Sophie Coll, 2nd year, BBS International as a result of a tragic accident on Monday, 25th September. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sophie’s parents Rory and Carol, her sisters Stephanie and Abbie, her friends, housemates, and fellow students. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.

Fr Campion of UL Chaplain is "supporting" the Coll family and housemates and will be holding a class service "in the next week or two".

Sophie's friends and family posted tributes on social media after her tragic death with many people noting how "kind" and "generous" Sophie was.

Sophie's family are asking that donations be made to animal charities such as 'Madra', 'the I.S.P.C.A' and 'Donkey Sanctuary' as Sophie "loved all animals".

Sophie is reposing at the 'Cillín' within the Church of Mary Immaculate Queen in Barna and the removal to the church will take place at 7pm with a requiem mass tomorrow at 1pm. Sophie will be buried at the Furbo Cemetary.

Gardai are investigating Sophie's death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
