NUIG, you deserve a pat on the back. As part of NUIG's Equality week, the NUIG SU's giving free tampons and sanitary pads away. The reasoning behind this is to highlight the huge extra cost for being a woman. A shocking figure is that sanitary products are 23% more expensive in Ireland than in the UK.
According to the Galway Independent, the Student Union will be distributing 'Tompax' – Time Of The Month Packs, today and on Thursday. During the week, there will be speakers talking about students workers rights, as well as the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
There will also be a panel discussion in discussing repealing the Eighth Amendment on Tuesday, which will be hosted by Amnesty International. Whereas on Wednesday, the Equality Team will be doing an accessibility audit of the NUI Galway Campus to figure out area that needs improvement for students with disabilities.
Fair play to NUIG for being so forward thinking on a subject that is unfortunately still taboo.
