In The Cinema This Week 30/9/13

Prisoners

Are you a fan of CSI, Criminal Minds and similar crime dramas? Well then you should love Prisoners, which essentially feels like a (really) long feature-length episode of CSI New York, just with more Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman and less Gary Sinise. Jackman’s young kid goes missing along with her friend, and Gyllenhaal leads the investigation into her disappearance. At just under three hours long, Prisoners is a daunting movie, but one that does a good job of holding your attention throughout. Just make sure to bring sandwiches, a flask of something tasty, and maybe some Red Bull to help get you through.

Runner Runner

Following 2012’s Oscar-winning Argo hasn’t been easy for Ben Affleck: this year’s To the Wonder was average at best, while his latest, Runner Runner blows completely. Justin Timberlake plays Richie, a student who travels to Costa Rica in order to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Affleck), who he claims to have swindled him. Boring and bringing absolutely nothing new to the table, this movie just feels derivative. A ticket for Prisoners is the same price, and not only do you get twice as many minutes as Runner Runner offers, you’ll also have a much more enjoyable experience.

Blue Jasmine

The annual Woody Allen movie is here, and it rocks. Cate Blanchett stars as Jasmine, a condescendingly snobby socialite whose life comes crashing down when her mega-rich husband (Alec Baldwin) gets thrown in jail. She goes to stay with her less well-off sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins), and consequently finds it hard to adjust to lower-middle class life. Filled with amazing, Oscar-worthy performances, this is the best Woody Allen movie in years: it’s occasionally funny, but too emotionally hard-hitting to be a ‘comedy’. Drag yourself to this film as soon as possible.
