With Michael D finishing up his seven-year term, it was only a matter of time before someone, or something, swooped in to attempt to take his place.
Higgins is running for a second term but will face stiff competition from not one but three dragons. Peter Casey, Séan Gallagher, and Gavin Duffy are all former panelists of RTÉs entrepreneurial show Dragons Den. The popular show saw a panel of dragons, a nickname for wealthy and experienced business owners, choose whether or not to invest in new businesses.
While Higgins might feel the heat from so much dragon breath, everyone couldn't help but make the same joke:
I’m pretty sure the hobbit beats the dragons at the end so keep em coming #Aras18 #KeepThePoet

Gavin Duffy thinks he can beat Michael D. Higgins...
Last time I checked, the Hobbit beat the Dragon.#gavinduffy #aras18 #miggildyhiggins

It looks like the Trump effect, a businessman-cum-reality-star turned President, and has convinced a number of Irish entrepreneurs to run for office but there are two faces Irish people want to see on the ballot paper:
If another entrepreneur enters the #aras18 race, I'd like it to be Mattress Mick.

With a recent polls revealing 70% of the public will vote for him, we think Miggeldy will be sticking around for another wee while:
