The Primary School Lunch Items All Irish People Used To Get In The 00s

Before carrot sticks and hummus and sliced apples with almond butter, Irish people used to all get the exact same lunches. Primary school was a shared experience by the fact we all dreaded the same food we were given every single day.

So let's take a trip down memory lane and wince at the food we were made to eat for years on end.

1) Petits Filous:

These were a staple in every lunch box across the country. The smell of yoghurt would grace the halls of every primary school and there would no doubt be some all over your school jumper.

2) Dairylea Dunkers:

Ugh, these were class. Dairylea Dunkers featured a square of cream cheese and bread sticks but there was one problem – the cheese would be gone after 2 sticks. It was the first time we ever experienced heartbreak.

3) Billy Roll:

Ah, Billy Roll, some sort of pork concoction that sent us into overdrive. It could brighten up even the saddest of sandwiches.

4) Wagon Wheels:

Wagon Wheels were only given to kids whose parents gave them a treat every day. Most of us mere mortals would stare wistfully at the treat while we attempted digest our flattened mandarin.

5) Ham And Cheese Sambos On Soda Bread:

The classic, the original, the best some would say. This was on the cards for about 90% of the Irish population.

6. Nutella And White Bread Sambos:

Another favourite from the daily treat-eaters. These would usually appear with the crusts cut off before the lucky student in question would squish the sambo flat until there was basically nothing left.

7. A Squished Banana At The End Of Your Bag:

Your parents would always be hopeful that you'd eat the banana, but alas you never did.

8. Milk Cartons:

Everyone, from every part of the country, would sprint like their life depended on it to get the 'Speedy' carton.

9. Penguin bars

This was normally enjoyed as a 'treat' on Fridays and of course, someone would read out the joke on the back and call it shite.

10. Babybels

'Bop, bop, bop, bop Babybel'. Who could forget the iconic ad for this rubbery cheese? Although it was gross, the act of taking off the wrapper was great craic. There was also always one deeply confused child who, having removed the wax cover, would presume it to be part of the culinary experience too and would down the wadge of red wax. Some of these people have presumably grown up to be politicians or pilots, a troubling thought.

11. Winders

Another fantastic treat day item, Winders were hyped AF. The ad alone was enough to make us force our Mams to buy them for us. God, we were littles shits.
