Modern day life means you're constantly weighed down with objects you don't usually need. The necessary equipment to get you through the day is usually your phone and bank card and now, it turns out, you just need the one.
AIB has launched Apple Pay, a digital service that allows all iPhone and Apple watch users to use their devices as a contactless payment card in a shop.
If you choose to, your Apple Pay will sync with your AIB debit card and personal credit cards everywhere that contactless payments are accepted.
Apple Pay can now be used by AIB, Ulster Bank, and KBC customers but not Bank of Ireland or Permanent TSB. Speaking to the Independent, head of digital products in AIB Fergal Coburn said:
Supporting Apple Pay is the latest in a number of innovative, customer focused developments that cements digital banking as an essential part of our customer’s daily lives...It’s about making banking more convenient for AIB customers, The way people are banking is changing and with Apple Pay our customers will have even greater choice in the way they purchase goods and services.
In order to use the system, you'll need the newest iPhone (an iPhone 6, iPhone 7 or iPhone SE). It can also be used with newer iPad models, MacBooks after 2012, with Touch ID on the new MacBook Pro and on all Apple Watches. Here are some other questions you might have about Apple Pay that we can answer:
How do I use it?
It's the exact same format as the way you use your bank card. Swipe your phone or Apple Watch against a contactless terminal to pay for something.
Can I use it everywhere I go?
Retail partners that use the system include Supervalu, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Aldi, Centra, Marks and Spencers, Insomnia, Boots, Harvey Norman and petrol stations such as Applegreen and Amber Oil. You can also use the system on some online shopping sites and apps.
How do I add Apple Pay to my iPhone?
Adding a card to an iPhone or an iPad is done through the Wallet app on the device. For an Apple Watch, it’s done through the Watch app on an iPhone.
What if I lose it?
The card can be disabled through icloud.com/find if your phone is lost or stolen or by ringing the bank and cancelling the card. Your iPhone banking is protected and each transaction validated by using a fingerprint or a pin code. Transaction limits are similar to those for existing contactless cards.
Can I return products?
Yes, you can! Products bought using Apple Pay on an iPhone or Watch can be returned, with the balance recredited through the gadgets themselves with the money returned to your card.
