Things Our Parents Told Us That We Should Have Listened To

When we were young and rebellious we tended to dismiss everything thing our parents said, what do they know they're old. Well, it turns out are parents were actually right, because they have been on this planet much longer than we have. Now that we're older and more mature we realise that they gave us some good advice. Here are the things are parents told us that we should have listened to.

20) Not to use swear words

I will confess that I myself have a bit of a potty mouth, even though my parents told me not to swear. If actually heeded some of their advice, then maybe I wouldn't need to use the fucking f word so much to emphasize everything.

19) Cleaning up after yourself

There are some people that are just natural slobs, even though their parents told them to clean up after themselves they are still extremely messy. When you get older and have to live with other people, they will give you shit about being so untidy plus it's a real turn off.

18) Always have manners

There are some people that literally have  no manners and they go through life always thinking about themselves. Having manners is one the best pieces of advice that our parents gave us, not only those it make a good impression, it also just means that you're not a complete asshole.

17) Don't leave the house with a wet head

How many times have you had a shower just before you leave the house and end up with a cold. They had a point, it's been passed down through generations, so next time you should have a shower an hour before you leave so you won't be making everyone else sick.

16) Treat people the way you want to be treated

If you can put yourself in someone else shoes and actually think about things from another perspective, it shows maturity. When you're in a relationship  later in life, they will always appreciate you seeing things through their eyes.

15) Good things come to those who wait

Patience is underrated nowadays,  we want everything right now and everything has to be instantaneous. Everyone seems to be trampling on each other's feet in order to get what they want. It's seems to be the people that shout the loudest that know the least.

14) Nothing in life is free

This doesn't just mean physical position it can pertain to a lot of different things. You won't get a job for free or a house you have to work for these things. If you go around thinking that things will be handed to you, you will be very disappointed.

13) The difference between what you want and what you need

This one is very important later on in life when you have to budget. When it comes between buying a new coffee machine or getting the toilet fixed this really comes into play. If you were spoiled as a kid it was always what you wanted, not what you needed.

12) Beauty is only skin deep

As cliched as it sounds, our parents were right when they told us that looks aren't everything. If you have no personality, no one is going to want to spend time with you. It's not to say you can't look good, but if you all you care about is looks, you're a really shallow person.

11) Having your health is better than wealth

Elvis could have learned a lot from this one, there is no point of having boatloads of money if you can't enjoy it. There is nothing more important than your health, the older you get the more you realise this. You can't live the same as you did when you were younger.

10) Not everything is as it seems

Sometimes things are really to good to be through, but we don't realise. As you get older you can tell if things are genuine or not, you're not blinded by your expectations of things. We tend to believe everything we see or read on the internet which is cause for concern.

9) You can only do your best

Not everyone is a child genius or a virtuoso, so it's nice to know that your parents just want you to do the best you can do. As you get older you get a grasp of your ability, so there is no point of trying to be somebody your not. if your expectations are low you might just surprise yourself.

8) You can do anything you put your mind to

Motivation can always be a struggle, but our parents were right when they said that if you really focus and put all your energy into something it will work out. Sometimes all people need is a little encouragement and then they will get the job done.

7) Life is too short to hold grudges

We all have people we don't like, but you're wasting time if your holding on to that hostility. Things happen and people move on, it's always better to just forgive and forget. People who still hold grudges aren't trustworthy and will always see the bad side of things.

6) Staying up late does you no good

When you were younger you always wanted to just stay up that little bit later. Once you get older and you can go to bed whenever you want sleep becomes more important. What good can you get from staying up until 3 in the morning watching tv. Every now and again it's ok butit's important to have a good sleep routine.

5) Blood is thicker than water

There is nothing more important than family, they are always there when you need them. Friends come and go, but you're family never changes. If you really get to know you're extended family you will always feel like you belong. So instead of being on your phone talking to your friends all the time, spend sometime with you're family.

4) Home is where the heart is

No matter where you travel or live in your life, a part of you is always where you come from. You will never have another first home , all your childhood memories took place there and you can never replace them.

3) Everyone has something they're good at

It can take years for some people to discover their hidden talent, so if you have a talent for something you might as well make the most of it. When you were young, you might have played an instrument or been a good artist, but somehow along the way you lost it.

2) It's good to try new things

Trying new are a great way of spicing things up. If you spend your life always doing the same thing it can get boring. They have been here much longer than us, so they know that trying new things keeps things interesting.

1) Respect your elders

When we're young we think that we're right and our parents out wrong, so you never respected them. They have been through it all so they know what they're talking about. If you know someone who is older than you, you can always pick their brain, just being on this planet longer makes them worthy of a lot more.
