Which 'Type' Of College Student Are You?

A massive part of engaging in the college lifestyle is encountering the vast variety of people it has to offer. Everyone of us falls under one of the genres of students listed below in some shape or form. Unlike when we were in secondary school, where being different to the crowd meant being isolated to a minuscule group of people sharing your common interests, college provides a platform for every type of student to flourish freely.

1. The Socialite

This student will typically be found among a large gang of well dressed individuals, usually in the focal point of where it’s all happening, like in the seat smack bang in the middle of the canteen or in the back row of the lecture theatre. Conversations among this group will consist primarily of analysing recent nights out that have passed, discussing future plans for up and coming nights out and scanning Facebook to find the latest offers and price reductions awaiting them in various nightclubs. All involved are sporting the latest clothes from the more expensive brands and haircuts which wouldn’t look out-of-place on a one direction member. Money seems to be no problem for the Socialite.

2. The Nerd

The social standing of the nerd has risen massively in the last decade. There was a time when anyone who had an interest in Star Wars and Computers and sported a thick pair of black glasses was automatically lambasted. However with the recent publicity that’s been given to shows such as ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and people like Mark Zuckerberg, nerds have been given a new lease of life. Mainly found in areas of the College where there is a plentiful supply of plug sockets and a strong Wifi connection, these students have no care for what the latest fashion trend is demanding or for the brand on their clothing. With a passion for gaming and computing, this group will often be seen huddled around a laptop with great concentration given to whatever is on the screen.

3. The Mosher

It’s safe to say that some of the most mysterious and intriguing students you will encounter during your college life fit firmly under this title. Often referred to as Emos, these students particularly embrace the platform of freedom college has provided them with. Moshers who will usually be dressed in less colorful clothing than the norm can be found in the more isolated, quiet parts of the college. The conversations held by this group are of a nature only known to those who are a part of this group or by outsiders who have been involved with such a rarity.

4. The County Footballer

The last group of students whose bad side you want to find yourself on, is this one. This student is a tall, muscly individual whose week revolves around 4 days of intense weight training in the elite section of the gym and counting how many chicken breasts he can consume per hour for those all important ‘gains’. Oh.. and of course making sure everyone knows about it via Snapchat. The love-life of many young county footballers is one envied by many different groups of young men as they are given endless attention from all sorts of women who worship their new-found stardom. Such women are commonly referred to as ‘Jersey Tuggers’. The day-to-day attire of these students will be made up mainly of gear they received from their respective county team, sporting three luminous stripes, just in case you missed the jersey and some state of the art super spongy gym shoes.

5. The Stoner

The student stoner is one very laid back, easy-going guy or girl who will deceivingly appear to have a lack of care for personal hygiene from their sleepy eyes, over grown bed head and carelessly neglected facial hair. These students have no real concern for keeping up with fashion either, keeping it very simple with retail therapy kept to an absolute minimum. They have what they see as far more important matters to tend to with their money. Conversations with the student stoner are some of the most interesting you will experience during your time in 3rd level education with depth and positivity vibrant in their discussions.

6. The Country Folk

Not exactly given such opportunities as a lot of students are to keep up with the latest fashion and technology advances, you might find this lot being a bit behind the times due to the isolation they find themselves in. The daily outfit of these students are bound to be made up of their county’s jersey from ten years previous which they bought on the way to Croke park on a day out with the whole family and a basket of sandwiches, a pair of withered wrangler jeans and depending on the day at hand, a pair of Asics runners or brown pair of shoes. However, despite this, meeting students who grace all the way from the countryside brings with it conversing with some of the most down to earth and friendly people you will meet.

7. The American

You’re bound to spot the American exchange student a mile away. Usually for some reason, the female American students of Ireland can be seen in groups of two to three enthusiastic, excited looking girls who look lost and bewildered with campus maps gripped firmly in hand. Leather knee-high boots and Regatta rainproof jackets are set firmly in place to fight off the mystical rainy Irish weather they heard so much about all the way back home in the States.

8…..The Student

There’s not a lot to be said for this lot other than they’re probably matching all the stereotypes of a typical student you can imagine. They’re made up of select parts of some of the genres listed above to make one big Ordinary-Joe-Student whose just there to get the degree and can’t wait for the day that they can finally say they’re finished with College. Never putting themselves in the limelight with grades which just about crawl above the average and wearing particular clothes just to fit into their surroundings, these run of the mill students will go through their college life relatively and happily unnoticed and unscathed.
