As the dust begins to die down on Leaving Cert exam results across the country, a number of students will begin to appeal their exam results.
While the process is common, in the past students sitting their LC were unable to keep a copy of their exam scripts until the European Union stepped in.
For the first time ever, students can now take a photo of their exam scripts or record their oral tests when they're deciding to appeal a grade at the end of the month. Students cannot photocopy the script.
The decision comes following a ruling by the European Court of Justice back in December. A man studying accountancy asked the Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) to view his exam scripts in order to challenge his result and was refused. The refusal was made as the exam papers did not constitute personal data under the data protection legislation.

The student took the case to the Circuit Court before it Supreme court hearing ruled that the matter should be brought before the European Court of Justice. The ECJ ruled in December the contents of the exam as personal data.
The move will come as a relief for students who can view their results before paying to appeal. Students are refunded the appeal amount if their grade is increased. To find out more about appealing your exam result click here.
