This Former British Band Member Could Be Ireland's 2018 Eurovision Entry

And we thought Dustin The Turkey was random...

According to The Irish Sun, Johnny Lydon aka 'Johnny Rotten' from the iconic British band The Sex Pistols is gunning for a shot at bringing the win back to Ireland.

The punk rock band were known for their outlandish behaviour and style in the 70s and became inspirations for later punk rock singers.  Now a song has been entered into RTE’s Eurosong competition for Lydon. The song was entered by songwriter Niall Mooney and has been described as a mixture of country and punk. Lydon's manager has confirmed that if RTÉ accepts the idea Johnny will rework the song with Niall and his band.

Lydon, who is 61, said: “It would be a great honour for me to represent Ireland for the Eurovision Song contest” and last week the singer told Today FM "“I am fully qualified as an American-English Irishman, well travelled, up and at it, and ready.”

Songwriter Mooney explained that RTÉ wanted this kind of act saying: “RTÉ told us to find singers who are used to playing to big crowds, a catchy song and, most of all, something unexpected which has never been done before at Eurovision.” Mooney has previously written songs for previous Eurovision winner Niamh Kavanagh and has penned the catchy punk track 'Pleased To Meet You' for Johnny.

Mooney revealed that the decision falls with RTÉ but an insider told the Irish Sun that the network is not keen on the idea of sending 'Johnny Rotten' to the Eurovision to scream into a microphone after Dustin The Turkeys act is believed to have caused damage to our reputation in Europe.

RTÉ is due to reveal Ireland’s 2018 entry after Christmas.
