Back in the day PE wasn't a subject many of us wanted to participate in but now, thanks in large to an ever-growing climate of fitness, mobility and health careers, more students are turning to Physical Education than ever.
Minister for Education and Skills, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D., has announced the 80 schools throughout Ireland that will be the first in the country to partake in the first phase of implementation of the new Physical Education for Senior Cycle programmes. The 80 schools will either implement the 'Physical Education Leaving Certificate' subject or the new 'Senior Cycle Physical Education Framework' (which is not for examination), or both.
The subject can be studied at both higher and ordinary levels, we're wondering how they'll be differentiated, and whether students will begin taking the LCPE subject from this September and will be examined in 2020. Although a total of 369 schools participated in the Departments project only 80 of the schools fulfilled the requirements for the subject.
The assessment procedures will include a physical activity project (20%), performance assessment (30%), and a written examination (50%). Students will be taught through eight stages, otherwise known as Strand 1 and Strand 2, for Leaving Certificate Physical Education (LCPE):
- Learning and improving skill and techniques.
- Physical and psychological demands of performance.
- Structures, strategies, roles and conventions.
- Planning for optimum performance.
- Promoting physical activity.
- Ethics and fair play.
- Physical activity and inclusion.
- Technology, media and sport.

If students are participating in Physical Education, but not undertaking an exam, they will learn six topics including Health-Related Physical Activity, Sport Education, Contemporary Issues in Physical Activity, Adventure Education, Personal and Social Responsibility and Teaching Games for Understanding.
