Last night saw devastation spread across the world within seconds when videos were shared to social media showing Notre Dame burning.
People from all across the globe took to Twitter to share their sympathy with the people of Paris and express their personal love for one of Paris' most iconic, cultural landmarks that has withstood centuries of wars and disasters, saved by so many, to be brought down by a fire last night.
Firefighters in Paris were quick to the scene and began to extinguish the fire, which was eventually put out eight hours after the fire was reported. Severe damage was done to the wooden roof that was built with beams 800 years ago. The stone construction survived the fire. One of the Rose windows has also survived, but the smaller one seems to be destroyed.
This will be a memorable moment in history where the love for art, heritage and culture that we all share brought us together to grieve a loss not only to Paris, but to the world.
Tweets have been surfacing all through the night with people expressing their heartbreak, as well as sharing memories of their own from the historic landmark.
As we try to process the devastating loss of the #NotreDame Cathedral, I'm reminded of this quote from Victor Hugo: "There are moments when, whatever the position of the body, the soul is on its knees.” For those who wish to donate to help rebuild: https://t.co/nmvnXzGfIk pic.twitter.com/UgWRtdkVb4

The fire broke out as the building was undergoing a €6.8m renovation. Since the fire began to burn, French millionaires and billionaires have been donating millions of euros to the reconstruction of the building already, with over €300m being donated so far.

Here is video that I took at #NotreDame a short time before the fire today. When we left, it was still a beautiful, sunny day at this wonderful monument. I am in shock! So very sad pic.twitter.com/xkeRinrZnG

Resistió tantas cosas... la revolución francesa, la comuna parisina, ambas guerras mundiales, pero no resistió a nuestra época.
