Green Goals: Irish University Plans Ban On Takeaway Cups

Takeaway cups could soon be a thing of the past on the University of Limerick campus as the college has rolled out a new environmentally friendly initiative which will see a bring your own cup system.

The food and beverage suppliers on campus are launching the BYOC system which would result in lower costs for the consumer and the environment.

UL president Dr Desmond Fitzgerald told The Limerick Leader that millions of takeaway cups are disposed of in landfill sites each week as most contain materials that are neither recyclable or compostable. Dr Fitzgerald said:

This situation is unsustainable and while every individual must take responsibility for our environment, we, as a public institution, must also do our part

While some food outlets in the University already serve hot beverages in compostable cups, the BYOC initiative is a move towards even greener pastures.

A most welcome development; However, a bring your own cup (BYOC) initiative would go a step further towards environmental sustainability and waste reduction

The food and beverage suppliers on campus are now actively engaged in developing a BYOC system, which would result in lower costs for the consumer and the environment.

UL is fortunate to be located on a beautiful campus and this initiative, along with others, will help to protect that campus and the wider environment for the generations of students to come.

The BYOC initiative comes just a month after the European Commission adopted the first-ever Europe-wide strategy on plastics - new plans will see single-use plastics, including disposable coffee cups, straws and takeaway packaging, banned across the EU by 2030.

We have to say, we're keen to go green #thinkbigatUL
