It may be a cliché, but we all know that the cinema is an easy first date. No awkward silences, no uneasy eye contact, and a ready made topic of conversation for the rest of the date! What can go wrong? Everything, everything can go wrong. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your first date flick.
Avoid the 3 hour epic
As much as you love Lord of the Rings, if she falls asleep 1 hour into a 3 hour epic you're basically fucked. When you're in a relationship it's normal but if she's snoozing during her first time in your presence your chances of getting her home just died.

Give horror a shot
This can go one of two ways. Bringing her to a gore-fest in the vein of Hostel or Saw could just spook the poor girl/guy and have them associate your first meeting with bursting eyes and severed limbs... not cool. Take her to a lighter and jumpier film and you can act as her popcorn munching protector. Cool.
What about a Rom/Com?

Again the potential for comforting is there but you run the risk of giving her unrealistic expectations. She's just watched the perfect example of a human male go to ridiculous lengths to win a girl's heart and when the lights turn on you have previously hidden food all over yourself. Reality just slapped her in the face in the form of your crumb laden jeans.
A heartbreaking tear-jerker?

You could be onto a winner here. As much as the film will probably (definitely) suck ass, you can be a shoulder to cry on and showing you aren't adverse to embracing your sensitive side can go a long way on a first date. If you have the perseverance to get through it, men everywhere salute you!
How about all out action?

Going for an action film is dodgy territory. A balls-to-the-walls shoot-em-up is likely to alienate her and cast you in a selfish light. Always remember the conversation to follow. "Remember the part where his head just literally exploded?" isn't going to incite mesmerising conversation but it might bore her to death. Depending on you, death is usually not favourable on a first date.
Comedy, everybody wins!
Typically people like to laugh. If she doesn't like to laugh then the film is irrelevant and you should leave now. This person is essentially an oxygen-thief. Comedies lighten the mood and laughing with your date is a short-cut to feeling more at ease together.
