Rolling Back The Years: September 2001

It was the month that changed the world as on the 11th, twelve years ago, the world trade centre was attacked in New York. This would ramifications for Americans and American musicians whose songs were thrown into new relief as "inappropriate." This happened with System of a Down's "Chop Suey" from the hit album Toxicity released that month. Despite this labelling by Clear Channel, the song would later go on to earn the band its first grammy nomination.

This song scares me- why are they so angry?

The MTV Video Music Awards are held on the 6th. It was a time when Limp Bizkit were all high and mighty due to the success of "Rollin'," a song which in retrospect is quite ludicrous. Best Hip-Hop video went to Outkast with "Ms Jackson" and "Lady Marmalade," a collaboration between Pink, Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim and Mya took home the grand prize of Best Video. The performances meanwhile included U2 performing "Elevation" and "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" and a controversial rendition of "I'm A Slave 4 U" by Britney Spears, skantily clad and with a large snake (and this was before she went crazy).

The snake doesn't lip-sync.

In relation to 9/11, the America: A Tribute To Heroes concert takes place, only ten days later. Performers included Bruce Sprinsteen, Tom Petty, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Neil Young and Mariah Carey amongst others. There would later be a Concert For New York in October which echoed the same sentiments in a growing patriotic country. George Bush's approval rates actually went up as far as 90% around this time.

Bush has since been heavily criticised but I don't know how to finish this sentence...

Jennifer Lopez' second (of 3) marriages begins when she weds her back-up dancer Cris Judd. This ends in June of 2002 and a string of celeb relationships soon follow including that of her Gigli co-star and now controversial Batman, Ben Affleck.

Two notable number 1 singles in this month include the Bob the Builder song and Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," which spent four weeks atop the charts!

She's now a judge on The Voice-how times have changed.
