Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus programme, which allows students from one country to study in another, with access to a grant. This year saw a record-breaking number of Irish students studying abroad.
Erasmus (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is an amazing way for students to experience other cultures, languages, ways of teaching and is also great craic to boot. According to the Irish Education Authority, (HEA) around 3200 Irish students go on Erasmus each year.
Originally the programme features 11 countries – Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom - with only 3,244 students travelling abroad to study in its first year.
According to the European Commission Erasmus website, the programme equips students with more employable traits such as confidence, problem-solving, adaptability and curiosity. As well as all the academic stuff, Erasmus is a great way to travel, make new friends and even learn a new language.
So, make sure to check if you're able to do an Erasmus programme in your course by asking your programme director. We guarantee you won't regret it.
