The day has only begun and the whole of Twitter is freaking out over this audio teaser, even celebrities are going bonkers over it.

After some intense research, it has come to my attention that there’s some serious science behind it. So why are we only hearing one or the other??
Speaking to the Verge, Lars Riecke, an assistant professor of audition and cognitive neuroscience at Maastricht University, explained (in a much more lengthy process) that the science behind it is due to frequency, your own hearing abilities, and what your brain thinks it’s supposed to hear.

Basically, if you are hearing Yanny, your hearing is still as good as it was when you were younger. Meaning, you’re still able to hear higher frequencies, which usually fades away with age. If you’re hearing Laurel, you’re hearing the acoustic frequencies of the recording, a sure sign you’re getting old!!
As well as that, your brain is being tricked into trying to fill what you’re hearing. So seeing as you’re being told it’s either Yanny or Laurel, your brain is looking to hear one or the other. Some people have been hearing stranger things, like mayo.
If you’re one the few who can hear both – congratulations you are super human!

This means your brain is able to differentiate between the frequencies. Many people have begun to hear both after hours of listening and melting their brains.

There’s many other factors that affect what you’re hearing, including the actual recording itself, and the background sounds in it. All in all, it’s just another crazy phenomenon that’s going to waste our time and stress us out. That said, we are still OBSESSED.
I hear Yanny, what do you hear?
