We’ve all seen the huge NO sign that’s been plastered onto the north side of Ben Bulben in Sligo by now, but have you seen all the memes?? Twitter has taken it upon itself, once again, to turn something horrific into something we’ll all laugh at for the duration of the campaign.

The Sligo for Life team climbed up Ben Bulben yesterday morning at 4a.m to stick sheets to it that read out NO, with the intention to get people to think about what their country wants. Except, that’s not what happened and the statement has caused more of an uproar than reflection.

Speaking to Ocean FM, Tommy Banks, one of the people involved in defacing Ben Bulben, compared the outcome of a Yes vote to “The holocaust of Ireland” and that this was “a cry from the mountains”. He also added that there were many young men helping them that morning, and that there were men of all ages campaigning for the no vote with them, and some woman were there “making tea and sandwiches”.

When the people of Sligo woke this morning, they found Ben Bulben to be back to its usual self, with the ‘NO’ being removed over-night due to an over-whelming amount of complaints from the community.
Even though the letters are gone, the memes will live on forever and continue to get even more funny as the day goes on. Check out #benbulben on Twitter for more.
