An Irish J1 student was one of three swimmers rescued in Maryland on Wednesday morning after getting into difficulty offshore.
Four swimmers had gone out together in the early morning, with one making it back to shore and contacting the Ocean City Fire Department for help. While two of the three were assisted back to shore by emergency services, the Irish student began to suffer an apparent cardiac arrest, as reported by MD Coast Dispatch.
The 22-year-old student was given CPR, before being transported to Atlantic General Hospital, where they remain in a serious condition. Conditions for swimming have been rough all week in the area after a weekend storm, with a 35-year-old man drowning on Monday after getting into difficulty.

Speaking after Monday's incident, Ocean City Emergency Services Director, Joe Theobald, said 'We urge our beach patrons to swim only when the lifeguards are on duty and to take the time to walk to and swim in front of the lifeguard.'
