John Lewis has made a name for itself over the years for being the top dog when it comes to Christmas ads. From the man on the moon to the boxer on the trampoline, monty the penguin, each year they manage to knock it out of the park. Until now.
This year sees a child struggle to stay awake after playing with 'Moz' the monster all night. The festive advert is directed by Michel Gondry (of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind fame) and cost seven million pounds to make.
Here is the video below:
On social media people have been queuing up to vent their disappointment at this year's effort:
John Lewis advert...I'm either half asleep or dim but I don't get it #Mozthemonster

Hmm, a little bit let down this year with the #JohnLewis ad not pulling on my heartstrings this year? #MozTheMonster

Sorry #MozTheMonster but Monty the penguin will always be the most adorable John Lewis Christmas ad character. #JohnLewis. pic.twitter.com/oqqB2FOiFP

Doesn't tug on heartstrings or make sense, boy annoyed with monster, monster farts, boy now friends with monster, plays all nights, tired all day, monster gets boy a light, monster disappears, boy loses friend he plays with but happy at the loss? Don't understand? #MozTheMonster

#MozTheMonster I normally love the John Lewis ads, but this one is pure garbage...

The youtube reaction wasn't much better:
What did you make of this year's effort?
